I was chatting with your friend and mine Thom last night, and the subject turned to Instagram, the photo-sharing darling app of the moment. Thom summed it up when he said the focus they’ve displayed is incredible; they’ve delivered a simple product, lowered the barriers to entry as far as possible, and inserted themselves into a space all their own.

What I like most is the app’s ability to be as big or as little as you want. They’ve clearly defined the key things they want you to do, and taken everything else out of the way. If I want to see a stream of photos from a friend, easy. If I actually want to create content, doubly so.

And having curated a list of key social networks to plug straight into ensures that rather than broadcasting to a tiny network of people who have also joined the service, they’ve plugged you straight into the networks that matter to you. It would have been so easy to build a photo-sharing network around this, hats off to them for not doing the obvious thing.

There are a raft of other players emerging, most notably picplz. Having had a quick look at it however, I was reminded of this piece from Buisness Insider on why Tumblr (this blogging platform) has striding ahead of Posterous.

All of this is a long way of saying your man Brad Burnham is bang on.
